Although Case Western Reserve University does not offer a degree in film studies, there is a dedicated film department with many course offerings. English undergraduate students can choose to specialize in film, while Master and PhD students can choose to have a substantial portion of their dissertations devoted to film. Cleveland State University offers a bachelors-level program in Film and Digital Media with concentrations in film (screenwriting and production), media studies, and digital media. CSU also offers a more practical filmmakers program and the Association in Independent Video and Filmmakers offers very highly regarded short courses for filmmakers.

Why Cleveland is a Great Place to Study Film & Video
Cleveland is just beginning to make its mark in the movie industry, as the site of a number of independent films and host of scenes in such movies as The Shawshank Redepemption (part of which was filmed in a Cleveland penitentiary), and Airforce One (in which Cleveland played the role of Russia). The Cleveland Film Commission established in 1998, was created to foster this environment and to welcome incoming productions with resources primed and ready, and has succeeded in creating a climate that is good for feature filmmakers, documentary filmmakers and those interested in experimental film.
